Boss hails Morgan takeover

wd2114916training-1-gd-15.jpgBoss Mick McCarthy today hailed the dawning of a new era for Wolves – and pledged to stick to his policy of recruiting “young and hungry” players to his Molineux revolution.

Steve Morgan’s £30million Molineux takeover will see the purse strings loosened on McCarthy’s summer transfer fund – although there will be no “open chequebook” for McCarthy to make signings before the start of next season.

The Wolves chief is adamant that he will continue to hunt for players in the mould of Andy Keogh and Michael Kightly over the summer – but admits extra funds will help the promotion tilt.

“I’m looking forward to it – these are exciting times,” McCarthy said.

“We’ve had an exciting season that came to an abrupt end, so it’s nice to have this news.

“But there will be no change of strategy from the club. What it comes down to is trying to sign good players.

“Keogh and Kightly are good players and I believe that if you can find good players for £25,000 why would you want to spend £250,000?

“Similarly if you can get them for £600,000 rather than £6million why wouldn’t you?”

McCarthy’s future is assured at the club as Morgan looks to build on a season of thrilling progress for Wolves.

The Molineux boss is yet to talk to the new owner, but has welcomed the dawn of the Morgan era as a positive sign for Wolves.

“If we can level the playing field with the clubs that come down, that is great,” McCarthy said.

“But I haven’t had those kind of discussions yet – this is all new to me at the moment. It’s likely that the three clubs who came down will go straight back up this season which tells you the difficulties we may face.

“I’m sure the teams coming down will have a distinct advantage because of their squads and the money they will get.”

With Morgan’s millions available for investment in players, expectation from the fans is sure to soar over the summer, but the club will be aiming to maintain the ‘feelgood factor’ that has served them so well last season.

McCarthy said: “The money is there for the development of the club.

“Anybody who takes it on from the success Sir Jack has brought the club is great.

“We are hoping to take another step forward next season,” added the Wolves manager.

I certainly hope that Mick McCarthy’s policy of recruiting “young and hungry” players continues as Wolves have had an excellent record with cheap players, e.g. Hibbert, Bull, Kightly but have rarely in their entire history spent large sums of money with effect.

What a difference a season makes! Just under a year ago the club seemed to be in decline with no money available for the squad, a manager who wasn’t popular with the fans walking out because the job was too difficult for him, a squad of 13 players and real fears about the possibility of relegation. A year on we have a young and exciting team led by a charismatic, straight talking manager who the fans love, a new owner, the possibility of investment and real optimism for the new season. Thankyou Sir jack for all your efforts on our behalf. I hope you can enjoy our new era as much as I hope we shall. C’mon me babbies!

This is the best news I’ve heard in a long time, a businessman with a large wallet to invest in us and a true passion for the game is just what we need now to give it our best shot next season. I’ve already booked my seat for next season and I firmly believe that you should too…

Welcome Steve - and farewell, Sir Jack! Future’s looking bright. Merlin doesn’t appear to need bucket loads of money to buy and then pay expensive players (unlike ‘that lot” up the road!) but what he does need is support and encouragement with some financial leeway to make some more excellent signings. Hope you’re up for this Steve - we’ll be keeping an eye on you, scouser!

From the manic Marshall days of the late seventies with one new stand with bright red seats. An ageing team of top division performers with all there careers ending closely together. The Andy Gray signing which was a la Leeds Utd ( O’leary ). The Doog being fooled by the crooked Bhatis, the 86 takeover of Sir Jack £50,000,000 spent. Turner years ( i still believe he should have had at least one more year at the helm). Taylor, McGhee, Lee, Jones. So near yet so far.Wolverhampton Wanderers needed a saviour and Sir Jack was he, there in our darkest days.PLEASE write a book, you could possibly call it HAYWARDS MILLIONS - WHO NEEDS MONEY ???? Good luck Mr Morgan, are you ready for the ride of your life !! To all the gold and black scarves live for the moment these could be heady days. Be proud and stay loud, but most of all KEEP THE FAITH.

A new dawn for the club - Thank you Sir Jack for doing the right thing and allowing someone else to take the reigns who intends to invest and move the club forward
The past is well documented and should remain exactly that - in the past - MM has the opportunity to buy wisely without ridiculous constraints - wasting millions is a crime, but equally so not buying the right players because they are slightly above budget is also just as bad in our view!

All the club needs now is a Chief Exec with talent and real ideas!

    Up the Wolves!

Very pleased with all this news
Sir Jack Deserves no criticism and I think Moxey deserves some credit for shaping the future of Wolves with getting such a manager as Mick McCarthy who is perfection for the club we are, while he has also had a hand in giving the club the financial potential and catalyst to give McCarthy the tools to help make the wolves a permanent premiership club.

Like others I believe wolves need to maintain the same strategy and slowly but surely strengthen the team in a push for the premiership, I trust this will happen. The 1990’s saw too many gambles on player signings that never paid off. Wolves need to start from the centre and build outward in order for long term success. Let’s not go for temporary “bolt-ons”

I genuinely believe and trust SJH’s faith in Morgan, and likewise I believe McCarthy will spend wisely and the club will maintain the strategy.

However wolves fans should not return to the dizzying heights of high expectation and pressure for success at wolves just because there is financial backing – I believe Moxey, SJH and MM have done enough to have our complete trust.

I have the faith in them and obviously hope I will be able to feel the same about Morgan; SJH trusts hime……so far the time being, I trust him.

The takeover has obviosuly been in the pipeline so in some ways it’s a pity we have not been promoted this season even though the team is not ready yet, a substantial immediate cash injection from Morgan may have been on the cards and this could well have given wolves a fantastic chance of staying in the premiership.

Thanks for everything Sir Jack! If Morgan proves to be half the man you are, there`s a chance we will get back to where we belong next season.
Let`s hope Derby go up and keep Sandwell Town down so we can reap our revenge next year!
Here`s hoping the contract to keep Moxey is a short term one!!
    Come on you Wolves!!!

Sir Jack - you’ve been a true gent in everything you have done for the club and deserve our thanks.I must admit that my heart sank when the new owner was revealed to NOT be a Wolves supporter . Also , the price of new players has no doubt shot up with the injection of new money - the usual catch ( cash) 22 situation . However , I will not be pessimistic as MM has proved very shrewed so far in the transfer market. Thanks for a great revival year to MM and the young cubs. Now please sort out the centre backs………some speed please !!!Best of luck for the new season.Come on you Wooolves !!!

This is great news for the club as Steve Morgan is a genuine football fan. Unfortunately Hayward wasn’t, but was taking the big decisions at Wolves. He built a great stadium, but otherwise undermined progress with poor managerial appointments, selling of key players at the worst possible times, allowing his money to be spent badly and worst of all generating a hefty profit whilst being relegated from the premiership. It is not coincidence that genuine sustainable progress is being made only now that he has ceased to be involved
